About this performance
Milton “Milt” Jackson was one of the most influential vibraphonists in the history of jazz. Best known as a founding member of the Modern Jazz Quartet, one of the longest-running ensembles in jazz history, Jackson helped redefine the role of the vibraphone in modern jazz. The quartet became renowned for its sophisticated fusion of classical music and jazz, combining elegant arrangements with inspired improvisation to create a sound that remains unique to this day. During a remarkable career spanning nearly six decades, Jackson performed and recorded with many of jazz’s greatest pioneers, including Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, and Coleman Hawkins. His outstanding contribution to music earned him numerous prestigious honours, including the National Music Award, the French Bicentennial Award, an Honorary Doctorate from the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, and induction into both the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame and the DownBeat Hall of Fame. This special concert paid tribute to Jackson’s extraordinary musical legacy through the artistry of Steve Nelson, one of the world’s foremost jazz vibraphonists and marimba players. Alongside his distinguished solo career, Nelson became widely recognised for his long-standing collaboration with Dave Holland’s Quintet and Big Band, as well as his performances with many of the leading figures in contemporary jazz. A graduate of Rutgers University, where he earned both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music, Nelson also served on the faculty of Princeton University. Throughout his career, he performed at leading concert halls and international jazz festivals, released numerous acclaimed recordings as a bandleader, and collaborated with celebrated artists including Kenny Barron, Bobby Watson, Mulgrew Miller, David “Fathead” Newman, Johnny Griffin, and Jackie McLean. For this unforgettable performance, Steve Nelson was joined by an exceptional rhythm section featuring Rob van Bavel on piano, Joris Teepe on double bass, and Marcel Serierse on drums. Together, they delivered a heartfelt and masterfully performed celebration of one of jazz’s true icons—a concert that remains a valuable part of the Watch Live Jazz concert library.

Club Cinetone was the original home of Watch Live Jazz, founded during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide jazz musicians with a professional stage while building a world-class streaming catalogue. The venue featured a state-of-the-art production setup with six HD cameras, a dedicated control room and professional audio engineering, enabling every concert to be streamed live and recorded in broadcast quality. After restrictions were lifted, an intimate audience of around 60 guests joined these unique performances, creating an unforgettable live atmosphere. Although Club Cinetone is no longer operating as a venue, its musical legacy lives on through the extensive Watch Live Jazz streaming catalogue, where these exceptional concerts remain available on demand.
