Steve Nelson

American vibraphonist Steve Nelson is widely regarded as one of the greatest vibraphone players of the modern jazz era. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he has become renowned for his rich harmonic language, lyrical improvisation and innovative approach to the instrument. Strongly influenced by Milt Jackson, Nelson has helped redefine the role of the vibraphone in contemporary jazz. A graduate of Rutgers University, Nelson has enjoyed long-standing collaborations with some of jazz’s most celebrated artists, including Dave Holland, Kenny Barron, Jackie McLean, Bobby Watson, Mulgrew Miller, Johnny Griffin and George Shearing. As a member of Dave Holland’s Quintet and Big Band, he appeared on numerous award-winning recordings and performed at leading concert halls and jazz festivals around the world. In addition to his acclaimed performing career, Nelson is a dedicated educator who has taught at Princeton University, William Paterson University, and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. His warm, expressive sound and masterful musicianship have established him as one of the defining voices of modern jazz vibraphone.
